PANEL 1
Game Panel – Leveraging a Brave New World of Play In recent years there has been an increase in the numbers of international creators and game developers who are on the cutting-edge of innovation within the industry. International markets have really taken off as gaming has gone global, from both a sales and development perspective. And we’re not just talking about Japan, the U.S. and Europe, but increasingly also Korea, China, and Russia have all experienced rapid growth. So how are these markets different and how are game creators and developers distinguishing themselves from one another in different regions of the world? What platforms and which types of games are driving growth in different countries? What can the U.S. learn from the success of some of these international success-stories and vice versa?

Panel – Opportunities and Challenges In Creating, Financing, Producing and Marketing
Movies It has never been more complicated to do business in the depressed and fragmented international film marketplace, yet the importance of a film succeeding internationally have never been more important to Hollywood. It’s no secret that international sales are the driving factor for success in the movie industry today. How is this impacting what films are getting made and the way business is done in Hollywood? How do you craft an international strategy that will ensure success in the movie business today? What can Hollywood learn from Bollywood and the success of movies at the intersection of cultures and languages as seen in Slumdog Millionaire, Babel and Diving Bell and the Butterfly?

PANEL 3
Transmedia Panel
–
Reconfiguring Entertainment for the 21st Century
Transmedia is the new buzz-word in Hollywood and it relates to unfolding of serial narratives on different platforms at the same time. Recent projects, such as Avatar, True Blood, and District 9, have all (with mixed success) relied on transmedia strategies to generate audience interest in previously unknown fictional universes, often combining promotional and expositional functions. This panel brings together visionaries and experts in the field of producing content for different mediums such as film and games, people who think deeply about our experiences of play, fun, and entertainment, to think about the future of entertainment as a concept. Topics that will be discussed include in what ways will the desire to produce and consume such experiences reconfigure the entertainment industry or conversely, how will the consolidation of media ownership generate or constrain new forms of popular culture, as for example by Disney buying of Marvel Comics? What models of media production, distribution, and consumption are implied by these future visions of entertainment?

1:45PM–2:30PM PANEL 4
Distribution Panel – Opportunities and Challenges in Reaching an Audience of Billions Films can make money 3 ways: at the box office in the country in which they’re made, in DVD form for purchase or rental, and in the international market. Lately, the third and last way has been growing steadily and now often represents bigger revenues than the domestic US market. The games industry also recognizes the huge potential of selling games abroad. However, getting that international hit is not as simple as just finding an international distributor. Localization and location matter and increasingly piracy is a concern, especially as distribution goes digital and anyone can distribute an illegal copy of your film or game to the whole world with the touch of a button. This panel will discuss human, technical, legal and business challenges involved in the
domestic and international distribution of games and films and present ideas of how to identify opportunities and avoid the pitfalls.

Fingertips – The Latest Global Trends in Content
for Mobile Devices This panel of mobile experts will explore the explosive growth of film, video and games on mobile devices. Executives at some of the most innovative mobile entertainment firms give their perspectives on the state of the industry. What are the lessons learned from different international markets and what business models are working at present? What platforms beyond the iPhone and iPad are the most exciting internationally? How are consumers responding to new product offerings? What are the mobile opportunities for the game and film industry? What are the technological — and business model — chokepoints to a more robust wireless entertainment experience?
